Located on a previously unused car park in Newbury’s town centre, this new 100 bed budget hotel with bar and restaurant fills a natural gap in the urban street. The gap left vacant between a relatively recent Travelodge hotel development and a former 1920’s cinema – now a health club.
The site also forms part of the gateway and approach to Newbury’s distinctively modern retail centre, Parkway – also a scheme by our architects. The Parkway scheme has influenced the selected materials for the hotel, which see the use of crisp rain-screen cladding on its façade, giving the building a recognisable contrast to the pale rendered finish of its immediate neighbours. The glazed ground floor restaurant ensures an active frontage to a new building in this key town centre location.
We played an active role in the public consultation exercise undertaken by the client with this development – meeting regularly with local residents and councillors, to achieve a high density scheme that was considerate to all its neighbours in a well populated yet town centre location.
The hotel will receive a BREEAM very good rating.
